Essential Information on Acne, Causes of Acne, and Types of Acne
Acne is a special dermatological condition which is most prevalent among teenagers between ages 11 to 21. However, it has no particular age or background of its occurrence. Sometimes it affects the skin of individuals who are at ages above 35 and even 40. It generally occurs during puberty due to hormonal changes. Other causes of its occurrence include ill hygiene and bacterial action.
Acne has no severe physical side effects, but subjects have lower confidence level when it affects one’s appearance and leave marks or scars which are permanent. Due to excessive oil secretion during period of hormonal imbalance, the pores of the skin clog up – this cause pimples and lumps on the surface of the face, neck, chest and even shoulders or upper arms. Minor acne includes blackheads and whiteheads. For severe condition, persons have lesions and cyst. These acnes are rather deep rooted. If you are seeking general acne information, it is best you should know about the types of acne that are commonly present.
Types of acne: Depending on the severity, these are the following types of conditions which occur.
- Acne Vulgaris
- Acne Rosacea
- Acne Conglobata
- Acne Fulminans
- Gram-Negative Folliculitis
- Pyoderma Faciale (Rosacea Fulminans)
- Mild/Moderate Acne: The most minor varieties in acne are blackheads, whiteheads papules and pustules. Whiteheads mostly occur when the pore becomes completely blocked. On the other hand when a small part of the dead skin oil and bacteria escapes into the surface, it becomes black. This is normally because of the melanin which is oxidized by the atmospheric oxygen. Compared to the whiteheads, the blackheads have a longer life cycle and it takes a long period to cure properly. Papules are the inflamed acne, while pustules are the inflamed acne which has a white or a yellow center.
- Severe Acne: Nodules are the most severe forms of acne and it lasts for about a month. It is usually large in size and extremely painful. Nodules extends deep into the skin surface and as such, often leave scars or marks. Cysts are as same as nodule, except for that it is filled with pus. Acne Rosacea is another severe form of acne which is often confused with acne vulgaris. It appears as a red rash and accompanies with skin blemishes, pimples and bumps.
There are other severe forms of acne as well like Acne Conglobata and Acne Fulminans. There are conditions most common to severe form of acne which is often described in the medical world as Gram-Negative Folliculitis and Pyoderma Faciale or Rosacea Fulminans.
Causes of acne: When seeking information on acne, it is extremely important to know about the possible cause of its occurrence. There are four main possible causes of acne. One is blockage of skin pores and the others are overactive oil glands, bacterial activity and inflammation. Our skin has oil glands which are connected to hair follicles through tiny canals. These glands are necessary to lubricate skin and maintain suppleness. When due to hormonal over activity and to ill hygiene, these pores blocks up, the skin swells up and pimples and nodules appear. Bacterial activity also causes inflammation, but in this case the bacterial chemical acts on the oil and alters the normal composition.
